Nick Owen

Luton Town Chairman and TV Personality

Dear Sir/Madam,
I was born and grew up just a few miles from Luton. I am proud to say I have followed Luton Town Football Club with a passion since 1958, as my father did before me. My four grown up children are devoted supporters too, travelling up and down the country following the team. I feel privileged to have been chairman since 2008. Quite simply, I love the club, its supporters, the town and its people.

Amongst the various types of radio and television programmes I have presented over more than 40 years, I have been involved in football as a broadcaster since the mid-seventies, I commentated on the World Cup in 1982 and anchored the tournament for ITV in 1990.

I have therefore seen, both here and abroad, how important a football club and its facilities can be for a community. I believe the plans for Luton Town's new stadium and the proposed features alongside are patently quite superb. Many towns around the country are known only for their football clubs. They lend significant profile to places that otherwise would hardly rate a mention in the media. Luton Town Football Club already has a history and reputation to be proud of, despite some turbulent times along the way. A brand new ground, with attendant modern facilities, would undoubtedly raise the town's profile to a new and exciting level.

Regenerating the town centre, as it will, in an area that's been long been an eyesore would be good for the whole community, young and old, and ensure it becomes a popular visitor destination.
I also have absolutely no doubt that this far seeing development would propel the football club back up the leagues to where we belong – and make all the residents and supporters truly proud of its status and prestige. I have no doubt either that such an iconic development, seen by thousands of rail travellers every day, will also propel the image of the town, something which is long awaited. I wholeheartedly support the project.

The proposals for Newlands Park are equally impressive and integral to the whole project. Besides creating hundreds of jobs and revitalising the town's economy, it would create such a vibrant gateway to the town we love, seen by millions from the motorway. What a tremendous advert for Luton and incentive for people to pay a visit!

Again, this is a development that I wholeheartedly support and I urge the council to grab this opportunity to take the town of Luton and its football club to a new level for the sake of everyone with the community at heart.
Yours faithfully,

Nick Owen
